Nick Saban talks Alabama bye week strategy, avoiding ‘Relief syndrome’

A hectic season for Alabama football takes a brief pause this week, as the Crimson Tide has its open date on Saturday, before facing LSU on Nov. 4. As is his habit during the bye week, head coach Nick Saban met with local media before addressing the Monday Morning Quarterback Club at Birmingham.

According to Saban, the time off could be beneficial for Alabama. However, it’s not a time to install any major scheme changes.

“I think it’s about correcting,” Saban said. “I think it’s about moving forward on what you’ve done. Seeing if there’s some tendency or something that we would add that subtract to create more balance in what you do so that you’re not giving your opponent some tell on what you’re going to run, so it’s a lot about self-analysis.”

After Saturday’s comeback win over Tennessee, Alabama’s players expressed excitement that the bye week had arrived. Saban said Monday that he thought most of the fatigue on the team was psychological, but the week off would do the group some good.

He detailed how his staff determined how to work the Crimson Tide this week.

“We do an analysis of, OK, what do we do this week compared to others? It’s 43%,” Saban said. “If you take from Sunday to Sunday, not playing a game next Saturday, not practicing today, only practicing three days, having five days off out of the next whatever, eight. They do 43% of the workload. So that should help guys physically recover.”

Especially after the Arkansas game, where Alabama faded in the second half, Saban has preached against “relief syndrome.” According to him, that’s when players get relieved with where they are and take their feet off the gas, allowing things like the Razorbacks’ late comeback to occur.

He said he doesn’t want the issue to pop up due to the time off.

“You do need to focus on, what do we need to improve?” Saban said. “This is not a time to get relief syndrome, like ‘OK, I’m just gonna go mess around.’”

Alabama will be back in action Nov. 4 against LSU. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:45 p.m. and will be aired on CBS.
